New YearJanuary is typically our fresh start, our reset button. You’ve probably made some resolutions or goals for yourself and hopefully for your business as well. I’m wondering, as leaders, if you’ve contemplated what impact you want to make this year, and what barriers are keeping you from making an impact today.

I’m sure you’ve read many stories about people who have been given a time frame for their life after a diagnosis of cancer or a life threatening disease. When they have that realization, all of a sudden their priorities change. They make a bucket list of things to do, and their priorities become crystal clear. It’s a hard reset button.      Reset Button

In my prior corporate life, we would refer to those leaders who were near retirement to be bullet proof. It was well accepted that they could do what they wanted, and say anything, because they were on their way out anyway. No one would fire them. They felt more empowered in their final year than they had their entire careers. What a shame, both for them and for the organization.

So what if you were bulletproof? What impact would you make?

More importantly, if today were your last day to make a critical impact in your organization:

Leadership Impact

  • What would you do differently?
  • Why aren’t you already doing it?
  • What do you need to start doing in order to make that impact?
  • What do you need to stop doing?

In Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture, he states:

“Time must be explicitly managed, like money. You can always change your plan, but only if you have one.
Ask yourself: Are you spending your time on the right things? Develop a good filing system. Rethink the telephone. Delegate. Take a time out.

Time is all you have. And you may find one day that you have less than you think.”

What is the legacy you want to leave for your organization?
